How a giant snow globe event works, start to finish

What actually happens on the day of a giant snow globe event?

The crew arrives outside operating hours, trolleys the kit in on the agreed route, positions and inflates the globe, ballasts and dresses it, manages cables and runs a functional check — around two to three hours in total. The globe then runs crewed sessions through the agreed hours, with snow swept and reused between groups, before a de-rig on the same route.

Most planning guides stop at the booking. This one deliberately covers the parts a client never normally sees, because they are where a smooth day comes from — the route walk, the ballast decision, the reset between sessions, the strike.

It is written from our own install method rather than from a brochure, and where a detail is not yet confirmed for publication it is flagged instead of filled in.

1. Enquiry and quote

Quotes are issued within 48 hours of an enquiry, based on the site, dates and scope.

The questions asked at this stage are the ones that decide feasibility: where, when, indoors or out, how long, branded or themed, and who is staffing the door.

2. Site check

We confirm footprint, headroom, ground, power and the load-in route before the date is worked up.

Where a site visit is not practical, that check is done from dimensioned plans and photographs. What matters is that nothing structural is discovered on install morning.

3. Theme, dressing and artwork

The theme is fixed and any printed branding is produced — the stage with the real lead time.

Working lead time for a fully branded install is four to six weeks. Unbranded seasonal dressing moves faster, but the same principle applies: decisions here unlock everything downstream.

4. Install day

Around two to three hours, outside trading or event hours, on the access route the venue allocated.

Route and positioning

Kit is trolleyed in and the globe is positioned before inflation, so the footprint and queue side are set against the real space rather than the plan.

Inflation, ballast and dressing

The blower inflates the structure and runs continuously while it stands. Ballast is set according to the surface and setting, then the internal scene is dressed and the snow medium loaded.

Cables, check and handover

Cable runs are managed — matted and signed outdoors — and a functional check is completed before the venue takes handover.

5. Crewed operation

Groups are brought forward in short timed sessions, roughly one every three minutes, with snow swept and reused between them.

The operators' job is unglamorous and decisive: keep the slot board honest, keep group sizes to the session, keep the medium circulating cleanly, and stand the globe down if conditions outdoors require it.

  • ❄Standard operation is two GlobeHire operational staff, with additional crew arranged for break cover, extended hours, split shifts or particular event requirements
  • ❄On multi-day installations the snow is refreshed daily and topped up where necessary
  • ❄Contaminated snow is removed, and disposed of through organic-waste recycling where appropriate

6. De-rig

Strike happens outside operating hours on the same access route, leaving the pitch as found.

Because the medium is dry and reused, there is no liquid clean-up. The pitch is swept and handed back.

7. After the event

The useful review is throughput against forecast, and anything the site taught us for next time.

Recurring venues benefit most from this: once a pitch, route and power point are proven, a return booking is a much shorter conversation.

Frequently asked

How long does install and de-rig take?

Installation takes around two to three hours; de-rig timing is agreed separately. Both are scheduled outside trading or event hours.

Who operates the globe during the event?

It is crewed. We can supply the crew, or brief venue stewards and hand over the operating instructions and RAMS pack.

What happens to the snow between sessions?

It is swept and reused. The medium is dry, plant-based and biodegradable, so there is no liquid and no residue on clothing.
